Jury

Reza Abedini holds BAs in graphic design and painting from University of Tehran. He’s a member of the Iranian Graphic Designers Society and AGI. He’s the recipient of many international awards, including the 2004 Hong Kong Poster Triennial gold prize and the 2004 Mexico poster Biennial first prize. Formerly a teacher in University of Tehran, he has held workshops in schools including: Hallo Academy, Holland; Intuit.Lab France; VCUQ, Qatar; LAU, Lebanon and Mimar Sinan, Turkey.

Pierre Bernard studied at the ENSAD – Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Ars Décoratifs in Paris. In 1970 he co-founded Grapus, a collective of graphic artists with idealistic principles that rejected commercial clients. Since the group disbanded in 1990, Pierre Bernard has established the design Atelier de Creation Graphique, with clients including the Louvre museum, the national parks of France, and the Centre Pompidou. A member of the AGI since 1987, he received the Erasmus Prize in 2006, and currently teaches at the ENSAD.

When Alain Le Quernec finished art school in Paris, he began to teach drawing. A period spent at the Fine Arts Academy in Warsaw in the 70s, studying with the painter and poster artist Henryk Tomaszewski, was to have a decisive influence on his artistic development. Since that watershed, his handling of space, words and symbols has been in keeping with the formal requirements of the Polish school. Since his return to France, he has lived and taught in Brittany. The Breton identity has marked his work and indeed has become one of its major features.

Malte Martin studied fine arts in Stuttgart and Paris. Plastic artist and graphic designer, he is the founder of the non-profit organization Agrafmobile. Martin opens up spaces for encounters and dialogues, as he strives to grab residents’ attention and encourage them to repossess their towns and cities. A former member of the now defunct Grapus collective, since 2006 he has been charged with the visual identity of Paris’ Théâtre de l’Athénée.

Saed Meshki holds a BA in Graphic Design from University of Tehran. An ICOGRADA excellence award recipient, he’s been a member of AGI since 2002. In the same year he co-founded “The 5th Color” group together with Reza Abedini and other Iranian designers to create a link between Iranian graphic design and the rest of the world. The group has organized several exhibitions in Iran and abroad. He’s currently a board member of the Iranian Graphic Designers Society and he teaches at University of Tehran.

Tommaso Minnetti is Associazione Culturale GoodDesign’s art director. In 2006 he co-founded Good50×70 with Pasquale. He used to work in Amsterdam for advertising agencies Lemon Scented Tea and Gummo. He teaches an art direction class at NABA – Nuova Accademia di Belle Arti in Milan and is a contributor for SocialDesignBlog.

Woody Pirtle graduated in Fine Arts from the University of Arkansas. A partner of Pentagram, he worked in the firm’s New York office for almost 20 years. In 2005 he re- established his original firm, Pirtle Design. A member of AGI and past board member of AIGA, in 2003 he was also awarded the association’s Medal for his contribution to the design profession. A socially committed designer, his clients include Amnesty International, Greenpeace and the Hudson Valley Preservation Commission. His work is part of the permanent collections of MoMa and the Copper Hewitt, National Design Museum, New York as well as the Victoria & Albert Museum, London.

Marjane Satrapi studied Decorative Arts in Strasbourg and holds a MA in Visual Communication from Azad University in Tehran. Author of many children’s books, her first published work is Persepolis, a graphic novel about her youth in Iran in the ’70s and ’80s. The book is the recipient of prestigious awards, has been translated in several languages and has been adapted into an animated film that won the Jury Prize at Cannes Film Festival and was nominated for an Academy Award. She’s currently working on a new feature film based on her book Chicken with Plums.

Pasquale Volpe is Associazione Culturale GoodDesign’s graphic designer and runs the visual communication studio PVolpeDesign, which he founded in 2007. In 2006 he co-founded Good50×70 with Tommaso, that later lead to the creation of GoodDesign itself. He leads the MA on Graphic Design at NABA – Nuova Accademia di Belle Arti in Milan.
